Arriving during the transfer window from La Liga side Valencia, the former Real Madrid and Benfica forward has gradually been adjusting to life in England’s top flight.
Signing a four-year deal which came with a transfer fee of £27m, the Brazil-born Spanish international made his Leeds debut against Liverpool on the opening day of the season, giving away the late penalty to hand Jurgen Klopp’s side all three points.
However, vital goal against Manchester City before the international break has seen some calling for him to get a starting place, with former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson among those to voice such an opinion.
What has Phillips said about Rodrigo?
Rodrigo, who earned his 24th cap for Spain on Wednesday night against Portugal, is now said to be full of confidence according to Phillips, who told Football Insider: “I hope this is a big moment for him.
“Doing it against an elite club in Manchester City will have done his confidence the world of good going into the international break.
“I have to say he was exceptional and so were Leeds.
“As a centre-forward, when you come on against a team in the bottom-half of the Premier League and do well you are please. But to do it against City, he will think, ‘I can do it against the very best.’
“It is great for Rodrigo, Bielsa and the Leeds fans as well. We have seen him perform now.”
Should Rodrigo now be a starter for Leeds?
The faith shown in Rodrigo by Spanish national coach Luis Enrique will no doubt be a big positive for Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, who has the 29-year-old and Patrick Bamford as his main attacking options.
Bamford will be hard to drop, having already netted three goals and gained one assist in four appearances so far this term. However, competition for places a good thing to have for Bielsa and Leeds fans should be quite satisfied with the form shown by both strikers.
