Phil Hay has admitted that Leeds United are still hopeful that Jack Harrison will sign a new deal.

The Lowdown: A poor season thus far

There has been a whole load of interest from other Premier League clubs in Harrison over the last 12 months with Newcastle United lodging two bids for him over the summer and then he was all set for a Leicester City medical in January.

That failed move to Leicester on deadline day will have certainly messed him up mentally as he would've been focused on playing for a new team, only to then head back to Leeds and have to impress a new boss in the form of Javi Gracia.

However, no matter what's already happened this season, it can't be an excuse for just one league goal all season for Harrison, although it's not all bad news as he could be in line for a bumper new deal.

The Latest: Leeds want Harrison to sign a new contract

Despite Harrison's continued run of poor displays, Hay has revealed on The Phil Hay Show that Leeds are keen to thrash out new terms with the former New York City FC winger.

He said: (27:55) "I don't know where he's at mentally [but] they're still talking about a new contract for him and Leeds are still hopeful that they can get that done."

The Verdict: A huge amount of faith is being put in Harrison

Perhaps Harrison just needs an arm around the shoulder and some reassurances over his future to get back to his dazzling best that he'd shown over the past few seasons by registering 25 goal involvements in the top flight.

However, it will have to be a deal that makes financial sense for Leeds because they don't want to get locked into a long-term deal with a winger that is no longer up to the standard of the Premier League.

Victor Orta may now be regretting the fact he never accepted the £35.5 million Newcastle were offering in the summer because it's safe to say his market value is nowhere near that after this poor season and the fact that he will become a free agent in the summer of 2024.
