It was a shock for everyone to see Illan Meslier not even in the match day squad for Leeds United against Brighton, and Marcelo Bielsa revealed why he was unavailable.
The latest on Meslier
Journalist for The Athletic Phil Hay reported what Bielsa had to say following the frustrating loss to Brighton. He tweeted: “Meslier was ill. Bielsa didn’t mention Covid but has already said that he won’t. “It wasn’t last minute.”
Leeds will be hoping he returns soon
This revelation on his absence is probably what most supporters would have guessed, but it is good to know that it is not a long-term issue.
If it is Covid, this means that the young goalkeeper could potentially miss the next couple of games, not just the one against Brighton and Hove Albion, and this is a big blow for the club.
Marcelo Bielsa clearly sees Meslier as his number one choice and he has had a fairly decent season, managing to make 67 saves and keep six clean sheets (Premier League).
It is especially worrying as Kiko Casilla, who came in to replace Meslier in the match against Brighton, has received a lot of criticism since joining the club, most recently in the shock FA Cup defeat to Crawley.
