The Lowdown: Leeds United get set to build on an impressive 2020/21 campaign
As the Yorkshiremen get set for their second season back in the big time of English football, they will be pulling out all the stops to improve on their impressive 9th placed finish in 2020/21 [BBC].
However, former Scotland manager McLeish has placed more stock on the existing furniture at the club in his latest comments.
Do you think Alioski will stay at Leeds United?
The Latest: McLeish praises Alioski after ‘cracking season’
Alioski has been given the proposal of signing a new contract with Leeds United in a fresh twist of events [Football Insider].
Previously, all hope looked lost as he rejected an agreement with his club of four years, looking set to join Turkish giants Galatasaray instead at the end of this month [Mirror].
Incredibly, these hopes now hang in the balance. Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish lavished praise on the 44-cap North Macedonia international after his impressive season.
“Alioski was like a jumping jack, a firework, the way he would do some really clever things, run at people and get balls in the box. Then all of a sudden he’s been asked to become a defender and a wing-back.
“I’ve got to say Leeds’ season was a big success and he was one of the players that helped to make it a big success. He’s had a cracking season. He’s probably short of being a top-class wing-back but he’s made certainly made a great attempt at it.
“Alioski is a player who’s surprised me very much in the wing-back role” [Football Insider].
The Verdict: Having Alioski around next season would be beneficial for Leeds United
Making a concrete contribution, McLeish has explained in simple terms why Leeds United are seemingly so keen to tie Alioski down as they move towards 2021/22.
Now set to decide on his next career move, Leeds United could do a lot worse than keeping the experienced left-sider around for another campaign or two, even if he is used more as a utility man than the first choice left-back.
In other news, Leeds United are interested in a swoop for a defensive midfielder.
