Leeds United: Noel Whelan fears for Diego Llorente

Leeds United: Noel Whelan fears for Diego Llorente - Leeds United News

Leeds United are currently without Diego Llorente as he recovers from another injury and Noel Whelan believes that his ongoing struggles will affect him both physically and mentally.

What Whelan had to say about Llorente

Whelan discussed Llorente and his injury as he told Football Insider: “They’re like your kids, you know, you have to reassure them, and you want to do the very best by your players. The thing is, it’s double for him because he’s not even at home really, he’s only been in England a short space of time so to join a new club, not be playing regularly, getting these little injuries, being put back six to eight weeks every single time you get one of these is going to be so damaging for his mental state.

“We all hate being injured or not being involved in the game but right now he probably feels a lot worse because it’s a new club, it’s a new city to him, a new country. So I think trying to keep on top of his mental wellbeing is just as important in getting him fit as well.”

It has been a tough start to life at Leeds for Llorente

The club already have injury issues at the back with Robin Koch currently recovering from surgery, so Bielsa must have been frustrated when Llorente had to come off injured against Newcastle recently.

The summer signing has had loads of injury struggles since he signed for the club, but shone in one of his two Premier League appearances for Leeds (SofaScore). The ‘fantastic’ Spaniard only featuring twice since his arrival will definitely be a worry for Marcelo Bielsa, even more so because he played so well when he got the chance, but rushing him back could be catastrophic.

Hamstring issues are incredibly hard to manage, but with Leeds eleventh in the division (SofaScore) and looking like they will comfortably stay in the top flight, these injuries the defender is suffering will not put a lot of stress on the club. However, Whelan is right when he says it will affect the player mentally as well. The club needs to take this into consideration and provide him with a lot of support so that when he is back on the pitch he is fully ready to help Leeds in the top flight.
