Leeds United picked up a good victory against Newcastle on Tuesday night and Phil Hay has tweeted out why this was such an important win for the club.
Hay, who has somewhat of a cult following from supporters on Twitter, tweeted: “The sort of win you take. Radrizzani was talking about challenging for Europe further down the line and there are things in that game tonight which shows where Leeds are going to have to improve longer term. But hell, 14 points clear of the bottom three at the halfway stage.”
Catalyst for Leeds
While the journalist seems perhaps less than impressed by the overall performance as he anointed it the ‘sort of win you take’, it is the final 11 words of his statement that are so crucial – ‘14 points clear of the bottom three at the halfway stage‘.
Hay is right to point to the positives despite it not being one of the rip-roaring Leeds displays we have become accustomed to. The Whites comfortably in twelfth and are only four points from the top eight (SofaScore) – this should provide a lot of motivation for the players to start looking up the table instead of down it.
Before the victory, Leeds had lost all of their games in 2021 without scoring, so the game will really be a huge morale boost for all associated with the club, and a few more wins will put them in a position to play out the end of the campaign without so much as an ounce of fear of relegation.
