The Athletic’s Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay has dropped a claim on Whites manager Marcelo Bielsa’s private opinion regarding the impact of the Elland Road pitch on the Yorkshire club’s home form.
This comes after Bielsa declared that he doesn’t believe the quality of the pitch is “a reason for the difficulties” his side has faced in home games this term, per Hay.
What has Hay said about Bielsa’s private view on this matter?
One particular fan of the Yorkshire club replied to Hay’s tweet relaying Bielsa’s comments and shared that they think while the quality of the pitch hasn’t been Leeds’ only problem in home games this term, ‘it clearly didn’t help’.
The journalist replied to that Leeds supporter and revealed that this is the Leeds manager’s own private view as well, and that “he just isn’t going to make excuses in public,” which indicates that the Argentinian believes the quality of the Elland Road pitch has had a bigger impact on the Whites’ home form than he’s letting on.
The home form of Leeds United
Leeds did manage to win two of their home games back in December, as they beat both Burnley (1-0) and Newcastle United (5-2).
However, they lost their last home game versus Brighton and Hove Albion (0-1), while they went on a winless run of five home games earlier this season, with Manchester City (1-1), Wolverhampton Wanderers (0-1), Leicester City (1-4), Arsenal (0-0) and West Ham United (1-2) all coming away from Elland Road with at least a point.
Leeds have also earned one more point and scored four more goals away from home than they’ve earned/scored at home this season.
So, one could certainly argue that Leeds have at least been somewhat less effective at home than they have been away from home this season and now that they are laying a new surface at Elland Road, which they bought from their Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, it will be interesting to see how much of an impact that has on their performances.
Is the pitch to blame for Leeds' home form?
