Phil Hay, The Athletic’s Leeds United correspondent, has picked Kalvin Phillips as his Leeds United player for 2020 as he praised him for his performances in the calendar year.
What Phil Hay had to say about Phillips
When reviewing the year and trying to decide which Leeds player stood out for him, Hay said: “The romantic in you wants to go for Pablo Hernandez.
His eight-game burst at the end of last season was heaven-sent, a 35-year-old with stardust in his boots turning in the most sensational form of his career. But over 2020 in its entirety? Who else but Kalvin Phillips?
Promotion, a medal for winning the title and an England debut that presents the chance of involvement at the European Championships next summer.
When Phillips “quarterbacks” a game like he did at Everton last month, you cannot help but remember how it was that he struggled for games under Steve Evans. Marcelo Bielsa’s coaching colliding with Phillips’ self-confidence created a monster.”
It’s hard to disagree with Phil Hay
The English midfielder has had an impressive start to life in the Premier League. The 24-year-old has been a menace for opposition attacks, averaging 2.6 tackles, 1.8 interceptions, and two clearances (WhoScored) per game and he has also picked up two assists.
He has had a great 2020 overall, as he was integral to Leeds getting promoted and he is now playing a key role in the Premier Leauge, where Leeds sit in 11th place going into 2021. The player also made his debut for England under Gareth Southgate and is now a valuable member of the national team squad.
It will be great for supporters to hear such praise about one of their players and many would most likely agree with the journalist’s selection.
It is also made better as Phillips is a graduate from their academy, so to see him shining on such a big stage will be a proud moment for all associated with Leeds.
