Leeds United picked up a crucial victory against Burnley on Sunday, and it was the exact response they needed after they lost 6-2 to Manchester United before Christmas. Phil Hay discussed Kalvin Phillips’ performance following the match at Elland Road.
Phil Hay praises Phillips
Following the game, the journalist tweeted: “That took a huge effort in the second half. All Burnley from HT onwards but Leeds dug in and the win takes them to 20 points. Huge performance from Phillips who did enough work for five today.”
The midfielder is shining in the Premier League
The English midfielder has had an impressive start to life in the Premier League. The 24-year-old has been a menace for opposition attacks, averaging 2.7 tackles, 1.8 interceptions, and 1.8 clearances (WhoScored) per game before he picked up an injury.
Neil Redfearn’s previous praise for Phillips may be the best summary of his excellent traits, as he said: “He is the perfect build for that position, a powerful player but also has a fantastic range of passing.”
It is easy to see why Phillips was praised by Hay as he played as a centre-back due to injuries and shone. The Englishman picked up a 7.2 rating (SofaScore). He made seven clearances, and three tackles, whilst also winning four ground duels and three aerials duels.
He has shown that his versatility and quality could be key for Leeds and he will be very proud of his performance against Burnley.
