Leeds United have had many issues in their defence. One of these has been the absence of Robin Koch due to injury. Journalist Phil Hay has provided an update on the defender and his possible return.
The latest on Koch
Writing in The Athletic (February 14 at 2.06pm), Hay said: “He’s doing well and coming on but Bielsa hasn’t given an updated timeframe yet so I would expect that we’re looking at the middle of next month most likely, given that he’ll probably go through U23 games first.”
This is great news for Leeds
The German defender was key in the back line for Leeds before his injury this campaign. He had featured in all ten Premier League matches until his absence and was great at stopping opposition attacks.
Koch managed 1.8 tackles, two interceptions and 2.1 clearances per game in the top-flight (WhoScored), ranking him highly among his teammates – in fact, only Liam Cooper and Pascal Struijk make more interceptions and clearances than him in this entire Leeds squad.
He was praised massively by Noel Whelan earlier this season, with the pundit saying: “Robin Koch stepped up. He looked like a leader there last night at the heart of the defence, which is what you want. I think that helps Luke Ayling, I thought the two of them were magnificent.”
His impact had even led to Tony Dorigo hailing the £15.3m-rated gem as “the rock in central defence”, while his former Freiburg teammate declared: “He’s very vocal at the back and he loves to have the game in front of him. He’s an outstanding organiser. His improvement is incredibly rapid, including in the national team, and he’s on a path to become a world-class player, a monster centre-back.”
This news will be very exciting for all associated with Leeds, as it looks like his surgery went perfectly and he is nearing his return. Hopefully he will be able to make an impact for the club before the end of the campaign and help them battle for a top half finish.
