Leeds United have lost their last two league fixtures and this could certainly be partially put down to some notable absentees. Phil Hay has provided an update on whether Rodrigo and Kalvin Phillips will return for the Southampton match, and it isn’t good news.
The latest injury news on Leeds
The journalist for The Athletic reported from Marcelo Bielsa’s press conference and shared: “Latest team news from Bielsa ahead of Southampton – Phillips and Rodrigo are still out. No other fresh problems.”
This is a huge blow for Leeds
It has truly been a remarkable 12 months for the £24.30m-valued (Transfermarkt) Phillips. He has been vital in getting the club back into the Premier League, and has also become an England player, with Gareth Southgate seemingly still searching for the perfect balance in his midfield.
Former LUFC striker Noel Whelan highlighted just how ‘integral’ he is to the Yorkshire club when he gave his thoughts recently to Football Insider over Phillips’ injury.
He is a big reason as to why Leeds currently sit eleventh in the Premier League, as he has managed 2.7 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 1.8 clearances a game (WhoScored).
Meanwhile Rodrigo was a regular for Bielsa’s team before his injury, as he had played in no fewer than 20 matches in total over all competitions in the 2020/21 term, scoring three goals and making one assist (Transfermarkt).
The two not being involved is definitely a big blow, but the Whites could jump into the top ten if they manage to take all three points.
