Leeds United put up a good fight against Leicester City last night. However, the Foxes were too strong in the end and came away with a 4-1 victory.
A lot of the news pre-game was discussing the noticeable absence of Raphinha from the squad and Phil Hay has provided an update that he was missing due to ankle injury. Following the match, the journalist was able to find out a bit more from Marcelo Bielsa on the severity of the injury.
Bielsa’s update on Leeds winger Raphinha
According to Hay, Bielsa believes the ankle injury the summer signing has is ‘not serious’ and the manager feels that Raphinha could possibly be in contention for their game against Crystal Palace.
Big boost for Bielsa
‘Not serious’ are the two words that supporters of the club would have wanted to hear. The summer signing, who cost the club an initial £17m, is being given time to settle in and has made two appearances from the bench so far.
However, the stats of the 23-year-old before arriving at Leeds highlight that he has a great eye for goal. The Brazilian has made 179 career appearances, scoring 44 times and picking up 26 assists. Therefore, the fact that he could be involved next weekend is a great bit of news.
It is also welcome news because fellow summer signing Rodrigo will likely not be available as he is having to isolate for 14 days.
Without both Rodrigo and Raphinha yesterday, Leeds’ attacking substitutions were Tyler Roberts, who has only managed 24 goals in his career, and Ian Poveda, who only has ten senior appearances to his name.
This highlights the need for players like Raphinha and despite his lack of appearances so far, the winger could still have a huge impact for Bielsa this season, so the sooner he’s fit, the better.
