Leeds United: Spain fans offer Rodrigo verdict after shock defeat

Leeds United: Spain fans offer Rodrigo verdict after shock defeat - Leeds United

Spain fans have reacted to the country’s shock defeat to Ukraine on Tuesday evening, with critical eyes turning towards Leeds United striker Rodrigo’s performance.

Despite dominating the game in terms of possession and attempts at goal, the Spanish national team lost 1-0 to Ukraine in their UEFA Nations League tie on Tuesday.

Spain boss Luis Enrique opted to go with a new look front three in his starting eleven, seeing Rodrigo spearhead the attack with Barcelona’s Ansu Fati and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Adama Traore on either flank.

No less than 21 goal attempts resulted from Spain’s domination but only eight of those attempts hit the target and they were made to pay for their lack of finishing when Viktor Tsyhankov scored the winner with 14 minutes remaining on the clock.

How did the Spain fans rate Rodrigo’s performance?

Whilst the defeat does keep Spain top of League A Group 4 in the Nations League, the performance has come as quite a shock to the press and fans on the Iberian peninsula.

Former Valencia man Rodrigo, who arrived to Marcelo Bielsa’s squad during the summer transfer window for a fee of £26m, has seen his performance discussed with Spanish daily Marca holding a player ratings vote.

Out of the 15 players who appeared for Spain during the game, the Leeds striker was voted second worst with fans very unhappy with his performance.

Marca wrote: ‘A good chance fell to his head from a Jesus Navas cross, but other than that he wasn’t great.’

Manchester United’s David de Gea was voted as the worst performer by fans.

Has Rodrigo impressed for Leeds since arriving?

Despite an opening day blunder against Liverpool which cost Leeds a draw against the Premier League champions, the Spanish forward has adapted himself well to the English game since.

A goal against Man City before the international break earned his side a valuable point and his performances have clearly been recognised by Enrique, who continues to select him for international duty.

Whilst his performance on Tuesday may not have been the best, Leeds fans can surely feel buoyed about what they have seen so far in club colours.
