Former Premier League defender believes that the absence of Kalvin Phillips will be a “huge miss” for Leeds United.

Former Premier League defender believes that the absence of Kalvin Phillips will be a “huge miss” for Leeds United.

Phillips out

The 25-year-old picked up a muscle problem during his side’s 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace and missed Sunday’s trip to Arsenal as a result.

This is the second injury that Phillips has picked up during the 2020/21 campaign after missing three games earlier in the season due to taking a knock to his shoulder.

Can you beat the impossible Leeds players quiz? First up, who is this battling against Watford in the FA Cup?

It has been a great 12 months for Phillips. Not only did he play a key role in helping the North Yorkshire side reach the Premier League last season, but also got a callup to the England squad by head coach Gareth Southgate.

Speaking to FootballFanCast, Howey delivered his verdict on what this might mean for Leeds going forward.

“Huge. Again, this is probably the third time we’ve said that it’s another opportunity for someone else to come in and grab their chance.

“With him, I’ve seen him make his debut and thought ‘decent, but what’s all the fuss about?’. But I hadn’t really watched him so my mind wasn’t made up. I’m hearing people say how good he is, and I had the opportunity to see him at Everton against Leeds.

“He was absolutely superb. Gareth Southgate was there and I spoke to him before the game, and I’ve seen him at another game and said to him afterwards ‘Wow, he was good. I can totally understand where you’re coming from getting him in the England squad’. And he said ‘He was good, wasn’t he? He ran the show’. He was absolutely brilliant and he’s a very, very impressive young man.”

Transfer Tavern Verdict

Of course, this will free up Phillips’ place for his teammates to jostle for his position to Bielsa’s squad. But there is no doubting that the £24.3m-rated star will be missed.

Phillips has accumulated the third-highest average match rating for Leeds with 7.06 and has averaged a pass success rate of 85.3% as well as 5.4 long balls and 2.7 tackles (Whoscored).

These stats along suggest that it will be difficult for the boss to find an adequate replacement and just shows why he trusts Phillips so much in the team.

In other news, Leeds United recruitment reportedly ‘tested the waters’ for ‘magical’ promising star.
