Phil Hay believes that Leeds United could look to sign a new left-back in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Only one transfer negative

Leeds have seemingly addressed several issues in their squad during the January transfer window by signing a new striker, defender and central midfielder as they bolstered the spine of their side.

The Whites, however, appear to have ignored a glaring issue in their squad for a second straight transfer window, which is at left-back - and that could see Pascal Struijk shoehorned into that position if Junior Firpo picks up an injury.

New signing Maximilian Wober can also play there, but as a centre-back by trade, it is not as if there is a purpose-made alternative to Firpo at present.

Firpo could indeed find himself back in the treatment room given his poor injury record since joining Leeds back in 2021, so there's no surprise that the Whites are going to be looking for a new left-back in the near future, according to Hay.

The Latest: A new left-back in the summer

It makes sense for Leeds to use the lengthy summer window to bring in someone at left-back, as it's a problem area for them - and that looks set to be the case, as Hay highlighted on The Phil Hay Show.

He said: "Who's to say, actually, that Wober on the left side of defence won't help what's going on outside him if it's somebody else at left-back? That is probably something to revisit further down the line."

The Verdict: Big risk for Leeds

While Hay makes a good point that having Wober as the left-sided centre-back could well help whoever is playing beside him, there's no guarantee that he stays injury-free and hits the ground running.

Therefore, it would have been a wise decision to bring in a more orthodox left-back - and with the Austrian playing most of his career at centre-back, that may not be the case.

If Leeds are to avoid relegation, they are going to need everyone to stay fit and on form, which is a lot of pressure to put on someone such as Firpo, who's had countless issues with knocks and niggles.

That said, Leeds have nevertheless improved their playing squad over the last few weeks - it is just a matter of whether their new additions can make the difference in their bid to stay up.
