Leeds: Jacobs claims club are ‘very keen’ to land Monteiro -Leeds United News

Leeds United are ‘very keen’ to get the deal for Diogo Monteiro over the line according to CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs.

According to The Athletic, Jesse Marsch’s side was lining up a bid in an attempt to bring the Portuguese defender to the Premier League, who currently plays for Swiss outfit Servette FC.

The defender has played three times in Switzerland’s Super League, with one of those appearances being a start and he’s averaged 48 minutes on the pitch so far this season.

Monteiro’s last match in the Swiss League came in a 0-0 draw against Young Boys, behind goalkeeper Jeremy Frick he had the second-highest rating on Sofascore along with former Premier League left-back Gael Clichy.

The Latest: Leeds want to wrap up Monteiro deal

Speaking on Joe Wainman’s YouTube channel, Jacobs claimed that the club are keen to get the deal done for the player. He also raved about the abilities that Monteiro possesses, stating he’s one for the future.

He said (35:02), “Leeds at least the last time I checked, we’re still lining up a bid but they’re very keen on getting this one done.

“He’s a Portuguese centre-back, very promising, very modern defender, good movement off the ball in a back four, can play in a back three as well.

“And he will only actually turn 18 I think towards the end of the window, in the last few days. So he adds a lot for the future and not only that, but he’s quite a mature player.”

The Verdict: A potential future star

We believe that Leeds could have a real talent on their hands in the form of Monteiro, he’s already achieved a lot for an 18-year-old.

The defender has already played a number of international games at youth level, for Portugal’s under-15s all the way through to the under-19s Monteiro has picked up a combined total of 36 caps for his nation.

With a strong performance against now top-of-the-table Young Boys, we can see why Marsch wants to bring the player to Elland Road and see if he can develop him to the next level.

Leeds have had success coaching their youth talent in the past including David Seaman, Gary Speed and James Milner. They’ve not had so much success when it comes to progressing players from outside of English-speaking nations, but there’ll be optimism around Monteiro should he make the switch later this month.
