Former Elland Road ace Noel Whelan has claimed that more teams will underestimate Leeds United this season after comments made by Manchester City defender Kyle Walker.
Returning to the Premier League after a 16-year wait this summer, the Yorkshire club have started the new season in great form.
An opening day defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s champions Liverpool has been followed by an unbeaten run, including a 1-1 draw against Manchester City.
Such form has seen the Whites promote themselves as a competitive top-flight side not just a relegation battler, currently sat 8th in the league standings and approaching the upcoming game against Wolverhampton Wanderers in good spirits.
Whelan tips Leeds to surprise PL sides this season
Discussing Leeds’ form, Man City defender Kyle Walker recently heaped praise on Marcelo Bielsa’s side, and former striker Whelan has followed those comments up by saying the Elland Road outfit will ‘surprise’ many teams this season.
“They are indeed,” Whelen told Football Insider. “I was saying during the commentary when I watched Man City, the best full-back in that team is Kyle Walker and the amount of times he gets forward into those final-third positions, he never really did it once in the game against Leeds United because he was being pushed back so much.
“He’s right, it was like a basketball match – it was: ‘You have a go, we’ll have a go,’ but we will surprise some teams, we really will. We deserved a little bit more than a point, quite frankly.”
Can Leeds finish in the top ten of the Premier League?
Quite simply, yes. Leeds look excellent this season and not much has changed from the style they played last term in the Championship.
A top ten finish would prove to be a superb first campaign back in England’s top flight, and it looks more than possible given the way they were able to go toe to toe with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City in sections of those matches.
Walker and Whelan’s comments further enhance just how good Leeds have been but for many fans, the players and Bielsa, they will know not be surprised one bit given the impression they have made over the last 12-18 months.
