Leeds United are looking to close a deal for FC Zurich forward Wilfried Gnonto, according to Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Lowdown: Gnonto profiled

Gnonto is just 18 years of age and is primarily a second striker who can also play as an attacking midfielder or as a centre-forward.

The youngster left Inter Milan for Zurich in 2020 and has gone on to score 12 goals for the club in 69 games. He also has four senior caps to his name for Italy, scoring once, and is now into the final 12 months of his Zurich contract.

The Latest: Leeds linked with Gnonto

Di Marzio has reported that Leeds are showing an interest in Gnonto as a replacement for Raphinha.

The reliable reporter adds that the Whites are aiming to wrap up a deal worth around €4m-€5m (£3.4m-£4.2m) before August 25.

The Verdict: One to watch?

Leeds could really do with stepping up their search for a new striker, and Gnonto could well be that man. Patrick Bamford went off with a fresh injury on Saturday and Joe Gelhardt didn’t travel to Southampton due to a minor problem, highlighting how short Jesse Marsch’s side are in attack.

Gnonto appears to be a future star and has already represented his country, so bringing him to Elland Road could be an inspired piece of business.

He would be able to play up front or just in behind a striker, so his versatility could be something of real use this season, should Bamford and Gelhardt stay relatively fit throughout the campaign when they return.
