# Leeds United: Dean Jones drops Sander Berge claim

**[Transfer insider](https://twitter.com/DeanJonesSoccer?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor) Dean Jones has delivered an intriguing claim involving [Leeds United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-news/) and a potential swoop for Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge.**

### The lowdown: Instant hit

Signed from Genk in January 2020 for £22million ([BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51316601)), Berge made a stellar start to life in the Premier League before surgery to a [badly injured hamstring](https://www.sheffieldunited.news/news/details-of-freak-sander-berge-injury-as-sheffield-united-have-more-bad-luck/) curtailed the Norwegian’s progress.

The 24-year-old had obtained UEFA Champions League experience and was hailed by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as an [‘interesting player’](https://www.fourfourtwo.com/news/jurgen-klopp-sander-berge-genk-liverpool-transfer-sheffield-united) even before arriving in England, and has flourished in the Championship since making a return to full fitness.

After [missing out on promotion](https://theathletic.com/3244651/2022/05/10/sheffield-united-eight-failed-play-off-attempts-and-trying-to-break-their-hoodoo/) back to the top-flight, Sheffield United may face a battle to keep Berge this summer, and one in the know transfer guru has claimed Leeds could strike…

### The latest: ‘Drawing up a list’

Speaking to [Give Me Sport](https://www.givemesport.com/88024601-leeds-unique-35m-midfielder-could-now-land-at-elland-road), Jones claimed that Berge could be one player on the radar at Elland Road as Jesse Marsch and Victor Orta look at ways of strengthening.

He said: “They’re obviously drawing up a list, at the moment, of players that they see as attainable more than anything and that fit in with Jesse Marsch’s style of play.

“Sander Berge, basically, is just one that is playing at a level below where he should be, and Leeds are getting the impression that he’s looking for a transfer.”

### The verdict: Smart acquisition

Out of contract in 2024 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sander-berge/profil/spieler/333014)), the [30-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sander-berge/nationalmannschaft/spieler/333014/verein_id/3440) Norway international would represent a viable option for the Whites this summer as Leeds potentially begin to play for life after the [highly sought-after](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61828813) Kalvin Phillips.

[Predominantly](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sander-berge/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/333014) a defensive-minded operator in the same mould as Phillips, Berge also showed a penchant for influencing matches higher up the pitch during a 2021/22 campaign that yielded [six goals and four assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sander-berge/leistungsdaten/spieler/333014) in 34 appearances across all competitions.

Standing at an imposing [6 foot 3](https://www.fotmob.com/players/540963) and boating impressive attacking and defensive attributes ([Sofascore](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/321020/Show/Sander-Berge)), the Norwegian – who was dubbed a [‘physical beast’](https://twitter.com/sebpedersen01/status/1371599265752039425) by football writer Sebastian Pedersen – certainly has the stature to withstand the test of the Premier League once again and with [persistent injuries](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adam-forshaw/verletzungen/spieler/121257) continuing to plague Adam Forshaw, this signing would be a worthwhile one at the right price.
