Darren Bent has called on Leeds United to make a summer move for Rangers defender Connor Goldson.
The 27-year-old centre-back has been attracting plenty of interest from a number of Premier League and Championship clubs of late, with the Whites and West Ham among those keen to sign him. With such interest emerging, a fresh report on Football Insider has claimed that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is desperate to keep him at the club.
Leeds, who are on the verge of a promotion to the Premier League, could be in the market for a new central defender this summer as they are set to lose Ben White to Brighton when his loan deal comes to an end.
Speaking about a potential move for Goldson, former Tottenham and England striker Bent has given his thoughts on Leeds’ interest. He told Football Insider: “I didn’t think he was all that bad at Brighton – I’ve always thought he was powerful, always demanding and a commanding presence about him.
“For Leeds, yeah, he’s played in the Premier League so I think you need experience when you go to the Premier League, it’s a league like no other.
“You need quality, you need power, you need a whole lot of things to succeed in the Premier League so for me yeah, that would be a great signing.
“I used to see him quite a lot, I knew he was a big, powerful presence and he played a lot for Brighton.”
Rangers boss Gerrard has started Goldson in almost every game since he took charge at the Scottish club, indicating that the defender is a big part of the Light Blues’ plans moving forward. Prior to his arrival in the Scottish Premiership, Goldson spent time with Brighton, Cheltenham and Shrewsbury, starting his professional career with the latter.
The defender would seemingly be a great fit for Leeds next term, although a question mark does remain over whether or not he can thrive in the English Premier League, a division in which he has made just three appearances.
Leeds manager Bielsa will have his work cut out to find a suitable replacement for the aforementioned White but the Argentine could probably do worse than to consider Goldson.
