Leeds United Deadline Day round-up: Marcelo Bielsa’s three-word update; Hay’s January claim

Leeds United Deadline Day round-up: Marcelo Bielsa’s three-word update; Hay’s January claim - Leeds United

With the domestic transfer window now closed, Leeds‘ transfer business concluded with a spend of just under £100m but what exactly happened on deadline day?

Whites manager Marcelo Bielsa is likely to feel content with his transfer business over the summer, having signed the likes of Rodrigo Moreno, Diego Llorente and Raphinha as part of an extensive transfer spree.

Despite those arrivals, plenty of speculation abounded over the Argentine’s alleged interest in a number of young midfielders such as Todd Cantwell and Louie Sibley.

Failed moves for the Championship duo followed similar disappointment in Bielsa’s attempted move for Michael Cuisance, who joined Marseille instead.

Phil Hay teases double Leeds deal for Cantwell and Sibley in January

Touching on the interest shown from Leeds in the midfield duo, The Athletic journalist Phil Hay said: “If neither player goes elsewhere – and there doesn’t seem to be anything in the offing for Cantwell and Derby are very resistant to losing Sibley – then they’re players who can be revisited in January or potentially next summer.”

Adding to the speculation, Bielsa was quizzed during his press conference ahead of Monday’s game against Wolves about the reasons behind his failure to sign a midfielder after missing out on Cuisance, delivering an immediate three-word riposte.

“Hernandez, Roberts, Rodrigo are options as attacking midfielders. Defensive midfielders we have Phillips, Pascal and Koch. Llorente eventually too. At eight we have Klich, Dallas, Shackleton and Alioski. The options,” he told reporters as quoted by LeedsLive.

Two players exit Leeds on loan deals

Robbie Gotts was the first of two Leeds players to leave the Yorkshire club this week, making a move to Lincoln City.

Joining Gotts in opting to spend a season on loan away from Elland Road is Barry Douglas, who sealed a temporary exit to Blackburn.

How content is Bielsa about Leeds’ summer transfer business?

It certainly has been a busy couple of months for Bielsa after gaining promotion to the Premier League and he has briefly touched on his transfer dealings ahead of the meeting with Wolves.

“This will be measured throughout the whole year,” Bielsa said when asked how much he feels his squad have improved.

“How much new have improved. Up until now Koch has been a continued presence in our team. Rodrigo is slowly increasing the minutes he contributes.

“Llorente and Raphinha have yet to play. In a league as long and demanding as the PL, everyone will get the chance to show their qualities and contribute.

“This is also for the young players who arrived in the academy. In the case of Pascal, Poveda, Davis, who have been through the under-23s, and also Tyler Roberts, who’s a young player. Between those five young players and four new signings. Thse players will cover the absences of Berardi, Forshaw, Douglas and White.”
