Leeds United have been linked with a possible loan move for Riqui Puig. However, it might not be as easy to get the player following the latest update at Barcelona.
The latest on Riqui Puig
According to Mundo Deportivo, via Inside Futbol, an injury to Philippe Coutinho means that Barcelona now need to reassess their plans for the January window and as such, Ronald Koeman will decide on the future of Puig.
This is a blow for Leeds
The Barcelona man was praised heavily by former manager Quique Setien, who said: “He has done an extraordinary job.”
Puig has made 20 appearances for the Barca first team, with only five of those coming this season (Transfermarkt). However, he has definitely showcased his potential in the UEFA Youth League. He has played ten times in the competition, picking up three assists and three goals in those matches. The midfielder has drawn some big comparisons, with Daniele Massaro believing he could be ‘the new Andrés Iniesta’.
Therefore, Leeds possibly not being able to make a loan move for the 21 year-old could be a big blow. The move would almost certainly have benefitted all parties. The player could get some great experience and grow as a player, whilst Leeds could have their hands on a real talent to help them for the season. As it stands, Coutinho’s knee injury may have thrown a spanner in the works.
