Darren Bent has claimed that he would look to leave Leeds United this summer if he was Spanish keeper Kiko Casilla.
The experience of former Real Madrid shot stopper Casilla is undoubted, but a run of poor form and a racism charge has put quite a dampener on his 2019/2020 season in a Leeds shirt.
Moving to Elland Road in 2018 on a four-and-a-half year contract from Real Madrid, Casilla has established himself as the club’s first choice keeper, making 35 appearances this season in the Championship.
15 clean sheets in those appearances have impressed, but his reputation has somewhat suffered a blow due to the aforementioned racism charge, which saw him banned for eight games and fined £60,000 for racially abusing Charlton Athletic loanee Jonathan Leko
Discussing his future ahead of what looks set to be an automatic promotion to the Premier League, Bent revealed his thoughts on how the Spaniard should address his future.
“I think it’s quite a tricky one because he’s been charged with the racism thing and Leeds continue to support him, but I don’t think that’s gone down well at all.
“Maybe, for me, if I’m Casilla, I’d step down and go back, go wherever I’m interested in going and leave.
“At the end of the day, whatever happens this is going to be brandished about him, wherever he goes, this is not going to leave him. It’s always going to be ‘Casilla, the Leeds keeper, or former Leeds goalkeeper, was caught up in race row’.
“I just think it’s not a good look for Leeds. I’m not quite sure what’s best for him so he might have to make that decision himself.”
A potential exit for Casilla would hand Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa with a problem on his hands, whilst Illan Meslier’s loan expiration will further enhance that problem.
Bielsa will undoubtedly be keen to secure a first choice keeper and backup options ahead of what looks increasingly likely to be a Premier League return.
