Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has praised the club’s decision to re-sign Gaetano Berardi.
Swiss defender Berardi saw his contract at Leeds come to an end over the summer after spending the last six seasons with in Yorkshire.
Featuring regularly during the first few seasons of his spell with the Whites, Berardi saw his playing time drop significantly over the recent times, starting just 30% of last season’s Championship games.
With the player a free agent, Leeds announced on domestic deadline day that an agreement had been made over a new one-year deal with the club offering to help as he continues to recover from an ACL injury.

What has Whelan said about Berardi and his return to Elland Road?
“He’s always been the professional, he’s always been reliable when he’s been called upon.” Whelan said to Football Insider.
“Yes, he’s had sending offs but you never want to take that aggression out of somebody’s game and play because that’s what people adore about him, that full commitment.
“It was sorry to see that he was having that great game and then he gets that injury but he is very big part of that promotion push.
“It’s the right thing to do, to reward him with a year deal after that horrific injury for his commitment to the club and what he brings to that group of players – experience and he seems like a character that everyone thrives off.”
Will Berardi feature in the Premier League?
If he returns to full fitness and Leeds continue to impress, there is no reason why the defender will not be afforded some minutes on the pitch.
His experience and presence within the squad could prove to be key assets for Bielsa this term, and he could be used as a player to see out games in the future.
It was the right decision from the club to offer him a new deal and look after him whilst his injury continues to recover and they are rightly being praised for it.
