Kevin Phillips has told Football Insider that he believes Gaetano Berardi will sign a new contract with Leeds United this summer.
Swiss defender Berardi will see his current contract expire at Elland Road this summer after spending the last six seasons with the Yorkshire club.
Featuring regularly during the first few seasons of his spell with Leeds, Berardi has somewhat struggled for game this season, playing largely as a backup to Ben White and Liam Cooper and starting just 30% of the Whites’ Championship games
And, with talk of his future developing, Phillips has now said that he expects the defender to sign new terms due to the lure of a potential Premier League campaign, despite a potential offer of first team football elsewhere.
“He has been at the club a while and would want to play in the Premier League with them,” Phillips told Football Insider.
“It is a difficult one. I had a similar situation when I left West Brom for Birmingham. They offered me the two-year contract which I was looking for.
“He might have the promise of more game time at another club but you want to be in the Premier League. Especially if you had been at Leeds for a long time.
“If the offer suits him and there is the opportunity to play in the Premier League I am sure he will opt for that.”
Phillips’ comments come on the back of a claim by The Athletic journalist Phil Hay, who has said that Marcelo Bielsa and the club want the centre-back to stay on past the current season.
It would be a very good deal for both Leeds and Berardi to keep him at the club through to next season as Bielsa will have very few options available come the summer when Ben White returns to Brighton and Hove Albion following his loan spell.
Whilst it is not expected that the Swiss defender will get a lot of playing time, his experience and commitment to the cause over the last few years could be key as Leeds return to England’s top flight.
