Leeds United: Kevin Phillips expects Barry Douglas to leave Elland Road - Leeds United

Former England striker Kevin Phillips has claimed that Barry Douglas looks set to leave Leeds United after a recent development.

Following promotion to the Premier League this summer, Elland Road manager Marcelo Bielsa took to the transfer window to bolster his squad options ahead of his team’s top-flight return.

Spending nearly £100m on new signings, the Yorkshire club brought in the likes of Rodrigo Moreno from Valencia and Diego Llorente from Real Sociedad.

With a number of new faces coming in through the doors at Leeds, Bielsa also allowed a number of player exits with Gaetano Berardi among those as his contract expired.

With the European transfer window now shut, domestic transfers are still allowed until next Friday, and Douglas is now seemingly on the verge of an exit with the likes of Blackburn Rovers keen to make a move (as per Football Insider).

What has Kevin Phillips said about Douglas?

Speaking to Football Insider, former Sunderland striker Phillips gave his thoughts on what the future holds for the 31-year-old Glasgow-born defender, saying:

“Whether the writing is on the wall, only Bielsa can answer that but I think he will be close to leaving.

“When a player like Davis is selected ahead of him it does not look good. It is not a good sign for him, especially seeing as David did really well and is a lot younger than Douglas.

“I think it could be the case that he leaves this month.”

During his time with Leeds, Douglas, has featured 44 times for the first team, having previously had spells with the likes of Wolvers and Lech Poznan.

Are Leeds right to allow Douglas to leave?

The simple answer is yes.

Removing Stuart Dallas from the left-back role in the Leeds starting XI would seem highly unlikely and therefore the chances of first team football this season appear rather slim for Douglas.

Dallas had a 7.26 out of 10 WhoScored rating for his performance against Manchester City and it is that form which has seen Douglas forced into the role of understudy.
