Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has said that he is unsure the club’s reported interest in Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell is genuine.
With the domestic transfer window coming to an end next Friday (16/10), Football Insider claimed that the Yorkshire club were ready to make a fresh approach for the Norwich midfielder.
Cantwell, who is currently on the books at Carrow Road, suffered relegation last season from the Premier League to the Championship but performed well on an individual basis, grabbing six goals and two assists in his 37 top-flight appearances.
Those impressive performances and statistics ultimately have seen the English youngster linked with a move to Elland Road and with time running out in the domestic window, former striker Whelan has now given his thoughts on a potential deal.
Whelan told Football Insider: “From what I have heard, was it Cantwell’s agent that was pushing that one? That is what I’ve been hearing on the grapevine.
“Leeds might be interested in him, but they weren’t desperate for him.
“It’s more his agent pushing that one.
“If he did come to Leeds we’d be getting a very good young player and we know Marcelo Bielsa likes that. But it obviously wasn’t his first port of call.
“There were other irons in the fire that he was looking at. Rafinha, I’m sure he was looking at and monitoring for quite a while now.”
Whelan’s comments come after Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reported that the Canaries starlet have already agreed personal terms over a move to Elland Road.
The comments from Whelan are somewhat surprising, especially with various claims that Cantwell has already agreed terms on a personal contract with Leeds.
Marcelo Bielsa has done some excellent work during the transfer window, and you have to feel that Cantwell would be the icing on the cake, especially given his growing reputation and praise from the likes of current boss Daniel Farke, who once labelled him as a ‘role model’.
With less than ten days to go until the domestic window closes, it will now be interesting to see if a move can materialise.
