Leeds United: Noel Whelan pleads with Bielsa to keep loanee - Leeds United

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has pleaded with Marcelo Bielsa to keep hold of Aberdeen loanee Ryan Edmondson.

19-year-old Edmondson arrived at Leeds in 2017 after spending time with York City and he has since developed through the various academy sides at Thorp Arch.

Making a good impression in the youth teams, the Harrogate born footballer made his debut for the Whites back in 2018 at the age of 16.

Minimal playing time since saw the young striker loaned out to Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen this summer and his form has been impressive, netting two goals and assisting his team-mates twice.

On loan in Scotland until January 2021, former Leeds man Whelan has now called on Bielsa to keep hold of the youngster past that date.

What has Whelan said regarding the future of Edmondson?

“He gets that great move to Aberdeen where it’s a fantastic club, it really is,” the ex-Leeds man told Football Insider.

“I had a great season there, great people there in and around the club, and then he gets that horrible injury.

“That could have set a lot of people back, especially young players, but it didn’t do that to him. Not only have we got someone who can score and create goals but it’s someone that’s got the right attitude and head on his shoulders.

“We’ve got a fighter. Now we’ve got to keep tabs on him, we really do. We can’t allow him to go after he’s come back like that.

“It’s like a boxer – when you lose a bout, you come back and you win that belt again. You could easily feel sorry for yourself but he’s come back even harder.

“I hope he goes on from strength to strength and shows what a good signing for Aberdeen he’s going to be.”

Does Edmondson have a chance to get in Leeds’ squad?

Bielsa has been keen to hand a number of youngsters a chance at Leeds having seen the likes of Kalvin Phillips develop significantly during his short career so far.

Should Edmondson continue with his form in Scotland then he should be afforded some proper chances at Elland Road in the future.

What also could fall in the favour of the youngster is that Leeds have just one recognised striker on the books at the current time in Patrick Bamford, considering the boss has used Rodrigo as more of a number ten.
