Leeds United have been linked with defender Jordan Amavi this transfer window and journalist for The Athletic, Phil Hay, has shed some light on how true these rumours are.
The latest on Amavi
As well as Leeds, fellow Premier League sides Arsenal and Crystal Palace have been linked to the Frenchman who played in the Premier League with Aston Villa in the past. He is valued at £9m (Transfermarkt), but could be picked up on a free in the summer when his contract expires.
One Leeds supporter asked Phil Hay whether Amavi was a player the club was actually looking to sign. Sadly for supporters, Hay replied: “I’m told not”.
Amavi could have been a good signing
The 26-year-old has made 15 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit this season, including five Champions League appearances (WhoScored). He has impressed in Ligue 1, averaging 1.2 tackles, 2.9 interceptions and 2.8 clearances a match. He also has some experience in England, making 48 appearances for Aston Villa from 2015-2017 (Transfermarkt).
Currently Leeds have Ezgjan Alioski and Leif Davis as their first team left-backs. However, Alioski has only managed 0.7 interceptions and 0.9 clearances per game in the Premier League (WhoScored), so perhaps relying solely on a converted midfielder isn’t the way forward.
Therefore it could have been a good signing as Bielsa could have moved Alioski further up the pitch and brought in Jordan Amavi. This would also educate young Davis a lot more as he would be learning from a proper left-back with Champions League experience.
