Phil Hay has been discussing Sean McGurk and claimed that Leeds United could “likely” make a move for the player in the January transfer window.
The latest on McGurk
The journalist for The Athletic spoke about the situation of youngsters loaned out from Thorp Arch, and then said: “If Leeds make any bids themselves, they are likely to be for prospects such as midfielder Sean McGurk at Wigan Athletic.”
The Whites have reportedly made an offer for McGurk, but face a fight to sign him from Glasgow Rangers.
This is exciting for Leeds
McGurk has not made an appearance for Wigan’s first team but scored twice in his four FA Youth Cup appearances last term (Transfermarkt). He is only 17, but the fact that the club are looking towards their future is very good and the player has received a lot of praise in the past.
His U18 manager at the Latics said after a match at Old Trafford: “Sean was brilliant, he’s been amazing. He had a slow start to his scholarship with an injury in the summer but, since he’s been fit, he’s got himself into the team and stayed there.
“He’s so effective in games, he sets things up, he scores goals and he’ll always do that because of his ability.”
He is also in the final seven months of his contract at the DW Stadium, which is due to expire next summer, so the Premier League side could pick him up on a free transfer in the summer or a bargain fee this month.
This type of transfer is very exciting because McGurk looks like a potential star for the future and it shows that Leeds are not just thinking about the present, and potentially even planning for life after Bielsa.
