Kevin Phillips believes the potential signing of Harry Wilson by Leeds United would be a good move by the Yorkshire club.
Developing through Liverpool’s youth academy, Wilson has struggled for playing time at Anfield, having had four different loan spells away from the Merseyside club.
Gaining first time experience with Crewe Alexandra, Hull City, Derby County and Bournemouth, Wilson has enhanced his reputation in English football, with the young Welsh forward particularly impressing with the Rams, playing an important part in Frank Lampard’s side that reached the play-off final last term.
Beating Leeds along the way in that play-off run last term, Wilson scored 18 goals and gained six assists whilst at Pride Park and that form has continued this season, scoring six goals and gaining two assists whilst on loan with Bournemouth.
Due to return to Liverpool this summer, it is now understood that Jurgen Klopp has opted to make the winger available for transfer and that has prompted interest from Leeds, who have missed out over the last two summers to sign the talented forward.
Valued at around £25m by the current Premier League leaders and soon-to-be champions, that figure is expected to drop due to the pandemic and the financial restraints put on clubs in England, and it could get near the £15.75m valuation set by website Transfermarkt.
Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips said: “Spending is going to come down so if they can get him for a reasonable price it could be a good option.
“They have tried to sign him before so they have done their homework and they know the player inside out.
“If they can get him at the right price he has Premier League experience and experience of playing for a massive club. There is certain demands on Leeds players.
“That could be a decent move for the kid and the club.”
Go and get him. A partnership between Wilson and Leeds makes perfect sense and it could prove to be one of the most shrewd signings of the summer transfer market.
Marcelo Bielsa is obviously a keen admirer of the winger, after attempting twice before to make a move, and you would have to feel that now Leeds are set to gain Premier League football – a third move would be easier to complete.
Goals and assists galore, Wilson could be the perfect option for Bielsa to strengthen his attacking options.
