Leeds United: Said Benrahma news justifies Leeds’ decision to halt their interest

Leeds United: Said Benrahma news justifies Leeds’ decision to halt their interest - Championship

Leeds United may have dodged a bullet after pulling out with their interest in Brentford’s Said Benrahma, as claims over his wage demands emerged.

Elland Road boss Marcelo Bielsa has made some significant signings this summer, adding strength and depth to his squad after they gained promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

With the likes of Rodrigo Moreno, Diego Llorente and European deadline day signing Raphinha all coming in, reported interest from the Yorkshire club in the likes of Benrahma has subsided.

The Algerian winger now looks likely to seal a deadline move to West Ham United, however, various claims have been made over alleged wage demands being made by the 25-year-old.

The Sun claim that Benrahma is asking for a wage of £60k-a-week, which totals to a figure of £3.1m-per-year, following on from The Athletic’s Dominic Fifield, who recently revealed that the Algeria international’s demands were damaging his chances of joining the Hammers, as quoted by MOT Leeds News.

Sky Sports are now reporting that the Irons have agreed terms, so it seems they may be stumping up a lot of cash to appease the tricky wing wizard.

Phil Hay’s dressing room claim; decision to sign Raphinha

With speculation mounting over Benrahma’s exit from Brentford to West Ham ahead of Friday’s deadline day, Leeds’ previous interest in the winger has been assessed again with MOT Leeds News looking back at Phil Hay’s thoughts on a deal. The popular journalist said earlier this summer that the player may not fit into the Leeds dressing room, via the Phil Hay Show Podcast.

That claim followed a video that showcased Benrahma on a luxury holiday at the height of the pandemic, footage that is said to have put Leeds off a potential move.

Moving on from the interest shown in the Brentford ace, Leeds opted to bring in the aforementioned Raphinha, signing the Brazilian in a deal worth £17m from Ligue 1 side Rennes.

The young winger penned a deal worth €1.6m-per-year (£1.4m) in wages, less than half of what Benrahma is reportedly going to receive from the Hammers.

Marcelo Bielsa’s philosophy; Wise decision to go for Raphinha

Bielsa is currently in charge of a Leeds side who are adapting well to the Premier League and have proven already how good they can be when they are all on the same page.

The former Athletic Bilbao coach is much praised for his meticulous approach when in charge of a club and it has come of no surprise that praise has been drawn of late about the ‘togetherness’ and ‘spirit’ in the Leeds camp.

Benrahma’s wage demands, matched with his so called ‘lavish lifestyle‘ could cause a slight problem amongst a squad that is so united behind one cause.

With things going so well at Leeds at the current time, Bielsa and the club’s hierarchy have certainly done the right thing to leave such interest alone.

Of course, Benrahma could have joined Leeds and become a huge success, but Bielsa’s current approach cannot be argued with, and if Raphinha is a hit on £1.7m-a-year less wages, then what a decision it could prove to be.
