Leeds United could make a move for exciting Derby County youngster Louie Sibley, according to former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips.

The Lowdown: Derby in crisis

While the Whites have managed to become an established Premier League club again, Derby find themselves in a financial crisis and are under threat of heading down to League One.

They have now been docked 12 points because of entering administration, in what is a hugely sad period for the club, perhaps one so damning that even Leeds fans will feel some sympathy... perhaps.

The Latest: Leeds tipped to sign Sibley

Derby's current situation could of course mean they have to sell players in order to generate funds and Sibley is one who could earn them a good amount of money as a young and homegrown talent.

The 20-year-old has been linked with a move to Leeds in the past, and speaking to Football Insider, Phillips, 48, also a regular on Sky Sports, tipped them to come back in for him:

"Unfortunately, when someone is having a tough time there are always predators waiting to jump and take advantage of the situation.

"It hurts me to see what is happening at Derby having spent three years there as a coach. Mel Morris did great things with the stadium and the training ground there but if you’re not careful it can come back to bite you on the backside. We have seen it happen to Leeds over the years.

"There is an opportunity now for clubs to sign the good players Derby have got for next to nothing. There will probably be some daft offers going in. Derby will need the money unless they find a buyer by then.

"It’s another opportunity for Leeds to sign Louie Sibley. I know very well and let me tell you he’d be a brilliant signing for them."

The Verdict: Exciting young prospect

Sibley is a young player with plenty of potential - he was once described as 'outstanding' by Derby Under-23s coach Pat Lyons - so Leeds would be wise to consider a move for him.

The midfielder has already made 60 appearances for Derby despite his tender years, showing that he is clearly trusted to be a key figure.

Granted, the step up to the Premier League is great, but Sibley is someone who could be viewed as a future regular, perhaps easing his way in slowly at Elland Road as a long-term prospect.
