# Leeds United: West Brom set to sign Whites target Saul Shotton

**West Bromwich Albion are set to sign Leeds United’s summer target Saul Shotton following Bury’s expulsion from the Football League, according to [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11688/11811016/saul-shotton-closing-on-west-brom-move-following-burys-expulsion-from-efl) and [BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49714737).**

The Whites and Premier League side Watford had approached Bury over a potential transfer in the summer ([Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11688/11811016/saul-shotton-closing-on-west-brom-move-following-burys-expulsion-from-efl)), but saw their offers rebuffed. However, Shotton’s League One side failing to secure a new owner before the [EFL’s deadline](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/aug/27/bury-takeover-cn-sporting-risk-collapses-hours-before-football-league-deadline) has left the teenager as a free agent.

Shotton had emerged from the youth ranks at Bury after moving to the Greater Manchester outfit from home town side Stoke City in 2017 ([TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/saul-shotton/profil/spieler/541518)), and made his senior debut under Lee Clark that September in an EFL Trophy tie at home to Rochdale.

The 18-year-old centre-half later started four consecutive League One encounters at the end of the season in the heart of Ryan Lowe’s backline, following a second change in manager mid-way through the campaign after Chris Lucketti was relieved of his duties ([BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44074088)).

Shotton had no part to play in Bury’s 2018/19 [League Two](https://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/9/Seasons/7381/Stages/16392/Show/England-League-Two-2018-2019) campaign as they secured promotion back into the third-tier as runners up to Lincoln City, though, but had attracted the interest of Watford and Leeds who both saw offers rejected.

However, Shotton has become a free agent in line with Bury’s expulsion from the Football League, and has agreed to a two-year contract with West Brom following an appearance in a reserve team game for Albion last week.

Leeds missing out on Shotton while a free agent will likely come as a blow to manager Marcelo Bielsa and Director of Football Victor Orta, as the Whites’ leaders must have seen the potential the centre-back prospect has in store to issue an official approach in the summer.

The Elland Road outfit also parted ways with potential future centre-back options in Aapo Halme to Barnsley and Paudie O’Connor at the end of his contract during the recent window ([TransferMarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leeds-united/transfers/verein/399)), leaving Pascal Struijk as the leading contender to break out of Carlos Corberan’s U23s ranks while Conor Shaughnessy is with Mansfield Town on loan.
