# Leeds: Valentin Castellanos ‘one to watch’

**[Leeds United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-news/) could make a move for New York City FC forward Valentin Castellanos this summer, according to journalist [Dean Jones](https://www.givemesport.com/88013084-leeds-make-18m-star-primary-target-as-53-goal-sensation-wanted-at-elland-road).**

### The Lowdown: Castellanos links

The Whites were credited with an interest in Castellanos back in February when they [reportedly](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-news/leeds-whites-make-contact-over-valentin-castellanos/) made contact with the forward’s representatives and were willing to pay £10.3m for the 23-year-old, who has been hailed as ‘[top-class](https://www.90min.com/posts/new-york-city-fc-news-ronny-deila-valentin-castellanos-praise)’ by Ronny Deila.

Castellanos, primarily a striker who can also play on the [wing](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/valentin-castellanos/profil/spieler/522784), has contributed to [76 goals in 126](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/valentin-castellanos/leistungsdaten/spieler/522784) games for the MLS side.

The Argentine is under contract until [2025](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/valentin-castellanos/profil/spieler/522784), but it appears as if a move to Elland Road is still a possibility.

### The Latest: Leeds update

Jones provided [GiveMeSport](https://www.givemesport.com/88013084-leeds-make-18m-star-primary-target-as-53-goal-sensation-wanted-at-elland-road) with a Leeds transfer guide on Thursday evening, shortly after Brenden Aaronson was [announced](https://www.leedsunited.com/news/team-news/29944/brenden-aaronson-to-join-leeds-united) as the club’s first summer signing.

When it came to who else the Whites could sign this summer, Castellanos was mentioned, with Jones describing it as ‘one to keep an eye on’.

### The Verdict: Needed?

Leeds lacked quality in front of goal last season, with star striker Patrick Bamford limited to just [seven](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/patrick-bamford/leistungsdaten/spieler/183334) Premier League starts due to a number of injuries.

Wide man Raphinha was the club’s top scorer with [11](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/19/Show/England-Leeds) goals, however, it looks as if he could be on the move to [Barcelona](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/leeds-transfer-news-raphinha-barcelona-27062708) over the coming months.

Therefore, bringing in a player like Castellanos, who has scored goals for fun in the USA, appears to be a shrewd move and would help Jesse Marsch implement his preferred 4-2-2-2 system in his first full season in charge, possibly striking up a partnership with Bamford.
