# Leeds: Whites in the race for Matheus Cunha

**[Leeds United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-news/) are thought to be in the race to sign Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha.**

### The Lowdown: Previous links

The Whites were [heavily linked](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/leeds-united-transfer-rumours/leeds-whites-eye-up-move-for-matheus-cunha/) with a move for Cunha last year when he was with Hertha Berlin, however, the player ended up moving to Atletico Madrid in a deal worth [€26m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matheus-cunha/transfers/spieler/517894) (£22.7m).

Since then, the 23-year-old has struggled to make a real impact in Spain, scoring just [seven](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matheus-cunha/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/517894) times in [54](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matheus-cunha/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/517894) games. He missed out on a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad as a result, and it looks as if he could be on the move again in 2023.

### The Latest: Leeds still keen on Cunha

On Sunday morning, [MOT Leeds News](https://motleedsnews.com/transfers/leeds-united-want-to-sign-atletico-madrid-forward-matheus-cunha-in-january/) relayed a transfer update from one [journalist](https://twitter.com/mattemoretto/status/1599092402764992512?s=46&t=H9wxTntwH7eP7LTf8NMRlg) regarding Cunha.

It is believed that the Whites are in the race for the forward’s services, along with Aston Villa, Everton and Wolves.

### The Verdict: Pedro instead?

Cunha has been described by former Hertha Berlin boss Bruno Labbadia as a player who has “[something special](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/who-is-matheus-cunha-hertha-berlin-s-nextgen-star-rb-leipzig-10654)”, although he appears to have struggled in his 54 games as an Atletico player.

He has taken his senior goal tally to [39](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/matheus-cunha/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/517894) but it could make sense for Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta to look elsewhere, with impressive Flamengo forward [Pedro](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/follow-up/leeds-premier-league-pedro-transfer-news-updates/), who has scored [29 goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pedro/leistungsdaten/spieler/432895) in 2022, also thought to be a target.

As we have seen in the past [with Dan James](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12395604/daniel-james-leeds-agree-25m-fee-with-man-utd-for-wales-winger), Leeds have been persistent with long-term targets. They may feel the same way with Cunha and could make their move in January.
