Former Leicester City player Steve Howey has told The Transfer Tavern that his old side needed another central defender, amid reports that they are closing in on the signing of Southampton’s Jannik Vestergaard.
Leicester have lost Wes Morgan after the ex-club captain decided to call time on his career at the end of last season but still have Caglar Soyuncu, Jonny Evans and Wesley Fofana to call upon.
However, the latter will be out of action until 2022 after suffering a broken leg from Fer Nino’s awful challenge in a pre-season friendly against Villarreal.
Do Leicester need another centre-back?
Speaking to TT just prior to that, Howey had already felt that Leicester needed a new centre-back, so it is perhaps something the Foxes may now look into following Fofana’s injury.
When asked what do Leicester need this summer, Howey said:
“Not a lot but if I’m being brutally honest, possibly another centre-half. Obviously they’ve got Jonny Evans and Soyuncu, but probably another centre-half.”
Fofana was absolutely immense for Leicester last season following his big-money move from Saint-Etienne.
In total, he made 28 Premier League appearances, recording an average of 2.2 interceptions per game. In Brendan Rodgers’ squad, only Wilfred Ndidi (2.3) had a better average (via WhoScored). His injury has undoubtedly dealt his side a huge blow.
