Leicester City are considering making a swoop for Rafael Benitez as a replacement for Brendan Rodgers, according to reports in the last 48 hours.

The Lowdown: Rodgers’ uncertain future

The Foxes found themselves bottom of the Premier League prior to the game against Nottingham Forest, leaving the 49-year-old boss on thin ice regarding his future at the King Power Stadium (The Athletic).

Despite being lifted just two points from safety after securing an emphatic 4-0 victory over Steve Cooper’s side, the Northern Irishman doesn’t appear to have escaped the pressure just yet.

The Latest: Leicester considering Benitez

According to Football Insider, Leicester and Forest are actually set to battle it out to secure Benitez’s services as a result of both board’s being unhappy with their current positions.

The report states that Rodgers is ‘far from safe’ despite the recent win, with the hierarchy noting the ‘low calibre and disjointed nature’ of their opponents, who were effectively ‘there for the taking’.

It’s understood that the Foxes are ‘considering’ the Spaniard as his successor, with club chiefs believed to ‘value his extensive Premier League experience as well as an impressive track record at various levels.’

The Verdict: Get it done…

Benitez would be a fantastic appointment for Leicester if they decide a change of manager is necessary, and one they should look at getting over the line as soon as possible if the opportunity arises.

The ‘tactical genius’, so called by fellow Champions League winner John Arne Riise, has won 548, drawn 249 and lost 301 out of 1098 games in charge throughout his career (Transfermarkt), and has multiple titles to his name, including the Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Supercup.

Benitez has an in-depth knowledge of the top flight having previously coached the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle, which could make him a perfect steady hand in the Midlands.
