Speaking to Football Insider, ex-Scotland international defender Alan Hutton has tipped Leicester City to make a £20 million bid for his compatriot Callum McGregor – with the Celtic star potentially moving away from Parkhead this summer for ‘big, big money’.
McGregor, who was a key player under Neil Lennon during the Hoops’ title-winning SPFL campaign last season, making 30 appearances overall, could be sold off to raise funds for the Glaswegian giants – and Hutton claims they would find it difficult to turn down £20m from Leicester.
Having worked with McGregor before, Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers knows the player well from his time north of the border, an era in the club’s history where they were hugely successful and dominant in Scotland under the ex-Liverpool gaffer.
Should Leicester pay £20 million to sign Callum McGregor?
No, rather try to sign Edouard
Hugely versatile, the 27-year-old can play in a number of positions across the midfield, including on both flanks and as a deep lying or further forward playmaker.
Amassing 19 international caps for his country, McGregor is also experienced on the biggest stages in world football, having a multitude of Europa League and Champions League appearances under his belt over the last few seasons (Transfermarkt).
Hutton, speaking to Football Insider, waxed lyrical over a potential move for the player – claiming he is ‘fantastic’ and Celtic’s ‘catalyst’.
Leicester fans could also be happy to know he his virtually injury-free most of time, as claimed by Hutton, with a £20 million move to the Premier League ‘difficult’ to turn down.
“It’s big, big money, but I think he’s fantastic – not only over the past couple of seasons but for years now,” explained the former top flight defender to FI.
“I don’t want to curse him or anything but he’s never injured. He is the catalyst. He’s a mainstay in the team, and he’s one of those guys who is a future captain, in my opinion.
“It’s going to be a tough decision, but money talks, and if Leicester come in with a £20 million up front bid, it will be difficult to turn down.”
Whether or not Leicester do in fact land their man is another story, but he could provide real strength in depth ahead of a busy 2020/2021 Premier League fixture calendar.
