According to a report from the Daily Mail, Leicester City are eyeing a potential transfer swoop for St Etienne rising star Wesley Fofana – and the Foxes will be remiss if they don’t take this opportunity to bag a defender reminiscent of 2015/2016 Robert Huth.
As per the Mail, City ‘want to sign‘ Fofana as manager Brendan Rodgers seeks more defensive cover ahead of the looming 2020/2021 Premier League campaign, but the Ligue 1 club’s £27 million valuation has thrown a potential spanner in the works.
Following the departure of Ben Chilwell and recent reports linking Caglar Soyuncu with a move away, the Midlands outfit may have to invest defensively if they want to remain European qualifying contenders.
Should Leicester pay £27m to sign Wesley Fofana?
Yes, get the deal done
No, far too expensive
Enter Fofana, who enjoyed a brilliant season for St Etienne over 2019/2020, as evident by his WhoScored stats which are similar to Leicester City title-winning colossus Huth.
While the German made far more clearances and tackles on average under Claudio Ranieri during Leicester’s famous title win, Fofana beat his 15/16 record of interceptions and successful aerial duels last campaign – marking him out as a real prospect and a potential key figure under Rodgers in future seasons.
Indeed, the 6ft 3 ace could well be a colossus worth the hassle, especially going by ex-Premier League midfielder Yohan Cabaye’s verdict on Fofana’s exploits in France.
Talking about Arsenal defender William Saliba to the Ligue 1 podcast (via the Daily Mail), Cabaye also dropped some big praise for Fofana, calling him ‘fantastic‘ alongside the promising Gunners addition.
Whether or not Leicester opt to heavily invest remains to be seen, but given his huge potential, Fofana may well be worth the punt.
