# Liverpool: Reds a ‘dark horse’ to sign Youri Tielemans

**[Journalist Paul Brown](https://twitter.com/pbsportswriter) has claimed that [Liverpool](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/liverpool-fc-news/) are a ‘dark horse’ to sign Youri Tielemans on a free transfer in the summer.**

### The Lowdown: Premier League battle

The likes of [Newcastle United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-news/leicester-transfer-news-tielemans-premier-league/), [Manchester United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/manchester-united-news/manchester-united-erik-ten-hag-youri-tielemans-transfer-news/) and [Arsenal](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/arsenal-fc-transfer-rumours/premier-league-arsenal-news-youri-tielemans-signing/) are reportedly looking at signing Tielemans, either in the January transfer window or in the summer.

His contract at Leicester City expires at the [end of the season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/youri-tielemans/profil/spieler/249565), meaning that he can leave for a cut-price in January, or as a free agent as he prepares to represent Belgium at the World Cup.

### The Latest: Liverpool a ‘dark horse’

Speaking to [GiveMeSport](https://www.givemesport.com/88082351-liverpool-transfer-news-midfielder-arsenal-premier-league), Brown has claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s side are a ‘dark horse’ in the race to sign Tielemans for free at the end of the campaign:

*“A dark horse to watch out for here his Liverpool. I would not be surprised at all if we saw Liverpool make a move for Tielemans as a free agent.”*

### The Verdict: Get it done

The Reds have been consistently [linked](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/liverpool-fc-news/liverpool-premier-league-jude-bellingham-transfers-news-updates-jurgen-klopp/) with a big-money move for Borussia Dortmund and England star Jude Bellingham, but signing Tielemans would save them a lot of cash while also helping to solve their midfield problems.

Naby Keita, Arthur Melo and James Milner have all been on the treatment table [this week](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/liverpools-current-injury-list-and-suspensions), while the likes of [Fabinho](https://twitter.com/DominicKing_DM/status/1586501704014520321?s=20&t=T8loGdGzHW0TPCM7QpPzIw) and [Jordan Henderson](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/liverpool-fc-news/liverpool-premier-league-jordan-henderson-james-pearce-updates-news/) have received criticism for some of their performances this season.

Lauded as ‘one of Europe’s top midfielders’ by Foxes manager [Brendan Rodgers](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10108967/Leicester-boss-Brendan-Rodgers-calls-Youri-Tielemans-one-Europes-midfielders.html), Tielemans ranks in the 88th percentile for tackles and 83rd for passes attempted and blocks for midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues over the last year ([FBRef](https://fbref.com/en/players/56f7a928/Youri-Tielemans)).

Given that he is only 25 years of age, and of course has Premier League experience, signing him on a free would be a smart, low-risk move by the Reds, should they be able to beat off the competition for his signature.
