French league game delayed after appalling fan behaviour

spursfansFootball fans alike in the Transfer Tavern last night were left shocked after the match between Marseille and Lyon had to be suspended for 23 minutes due to fears of player safety after fan abuse.

As reported in the Daily Mail today, the majority of the abuse was directed by Marseille fans towards former player Matheiu Valbuena, who this summer joined rivals Lyon after leaving the club last year. An effigy of the 5ft 4 attacking midfielder was hung behind the goal at the start of the game, and he was booed and violently taunted throughout.

Jeremy Morel, who departed Marseilles in the summer on a Bosman move, also turned out for Lyon, but while he was also whistled and jeered, it was not to the same magnitude.

Playing in there newly upgraded 67,000 seater Stade Velodrome the game was eventually suspended by referee Ruddy Buquet.

He took the players off the field as Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes was pelted with glass bottles and other missiles.  Flares and fireworks were thrown onto the pitch and around the crowds. Striker Michy Batshuayi was even hit by a firework whilst playing.

The game eventually resumed after 23 minutes, after riot police was stationed all around the pitch and the game went onto finish 1-1.

Our football fans here in the Transfer Tavern have expressed their disbelief, exclaiming they can understand a rivalry but think this is completely out of order!
