There’s lively debate within the Transfer Tavern as jokes and jibes fire across from the Liverpool fans following reports in the [Daily Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/04/14/daniel-sturridge-faces-competition-from-andy-carroll-for-england/) that Reds striker Daniel Sturridge has his Euro 2016 under threat.

Ironically enough, his main competition is [said](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/04/14/daniel-sturridge-faces-competition-from-andy-carroll-for-england/) to come from a man who used to ply his trade at Anfield himself – a certain Andy Carroll.

Thrust into the limelight recently, the towering West Ham star notched a sensational hat-trick against Arsenal, prompting calls to see him included in the England squad this summer.

It is [claimed](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/04/14/daniel-sturridge-faces-competition-from-andy-carroll-for-england/) that Three Lions chief Roy Hodgson has decided upon taking the quartet of Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Danny Welbeck, opening up space for just one more forward.

Gunners star Theo Walcott is [reportedly](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/04/14/daniel-sturridge-faces-competition-from-andy-carroll-for-england/) set to miss out after losing his place at club level, meaning it could be a straight fight between Sturridge and Carroll.

The former was the nation’s first-choice forward just two years ago for the World Cup, though has been blighted by injury ever since.

There are [understood](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/04/14/daniel-sturridge-faces-competition-from-andy-carroll-for-england/) to be doubts as to whether the 26-year old will be able to perform at full capacity after such a nightmare 18 month spell.

Meanwhile, Carroll has not appeared at national level for almost four years, though could represent more variety heading into this summer’s tournament in France.

He is [reported](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/04/14/daniel-sturridge-faces-competition-from-andy-carroll-for-england/) to be viewed as a unique option by the coaching staff, offering power and aerial threat like no other potential inclusion.

**Can England really afford not to take Sturridge? Does Carroll offer a better option to change things up?**
