# Liverpool eye move for experienced PL defender

***The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping for a busy few weeks..***

Jurgen Klopp has got his side playing fantastically this season, and for the Reds in the pub – a title challenge is almost certainly on the way.

The Merseyside-based club have been seriously impressive in the Premier League this season, but our landlord thinks that their lack of good, experienced squad depth could cost them long-term.

It would appear as though Jurgen Klopp is in agreement, too, with the [Express reporting](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/southampton-skipper-jose-fonte-lined-9622040) that the Reds have an eye on Southampton defender Jose Fonte.

[The Express are reporting](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/southampton-skipper-jose-fonte-lined-9622040) that Liverpool want Fonte to add a bit of steel to their disappointing defence, with out-of-favour defender Mamadou Sakho potentially going the other way as part of the deal.

The interest is significant, given that Fonte [recently handed in a transfer request](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/38523114) at St Mary’s – with the Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern expecting a transfer away from Southampton this month.

Despite his recent decision to leave the club, Fonte has not let his performances slip this season. He has been a consistent member of Southampton’s first team all season, offering an experienced and dedicated hand at the heart of an otherwise disappointing first team.
