# Liverpool: Fans believe Joe Gomez can ‘step up’ amid Joel Matip absence

**Liverpool fans [believe](https://twitter.com/GrizzKhan/status/1188900263303827457) that Joe Gomez can fill the void left by the Cameroonian centre back Joel Matip after suffering a further injury setback with his knee.**

The 28-year-old has been credited in recent weeks for his consistent performances at the back for the Reds, with manager Jurgen Klopp regarding him as one of “[the best pieces of business](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49854788)” after arriving on a [free transfer](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/feb/15/joel-matip-liverpool-schalke-transfer-signing) from Bundesliga side Schalke.

Matip has featured in seven Premier League games this season and scored during his side’s [3-1](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spielbericht/index/spielbericht/3219086) win against Arsenal in August.

Fans believe that England international Joe Gomez can come in and do a similar job that Matip was doing alongside the colossus Virgil van Dijk.

The 22-year-old has featured in [three](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/profil/spieler/256178) Premier League games during the current campaign and continues to make a slow comeback after [breaking his leg](https://talksport.com/football/458668/joe-gomez-injury-burnley-ben-mee-liverpool/) against Burnley last season.

One fan said that it will always be a problem without Matip but feels that Gomez has to start on Wednesday against Arsenal.

Here you will find some of the best responses from Liverpool fans:

> Massive blow. Especially for city game. Least there’s an international break during that period I suppose.

> Need to give Gomez a run in the side and get him back into form. Absolutely no way should Lovren be trusted. By far the weakest player in the Liverpool team

> Matip being out for 6 weeks will hopefully mirror Gomez’s injury last season and force the latter to step up in his absence, vital the Gomez from last season comes back into the team because Lovren can’t be relied upon consistently
