# Liverpool: Fans criticise Lothar Matthaus comments about Thiago Alcantara

**Many Liverpool fans took exception to comments that former Bayern Munich icon Lothar Matthaus made about midfielder Thiago Alcantara.**

The 29-year-old [made the move](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54199589#:~:text=Liverpool%20have%20signed%20midfielder%20Thiago,be%20here%2C%22%20he%20said.) to Anfield from the Bavarian giants in the summer but has spent most of his time on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury against Everton.

L’Equipe (via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/damaging-michael-edwards-decisions-impacting-liverpool-plan-looks-like-failure/)) suggested that his time on Merseyside appears to be a failure and Matthaus joined the train of criticism, telling [Sky Germany](https://sport.sky.de/fussball/artikel/fc-bayern-transfer-news-matthaeus-spricht-ueber-rueckkehr-von-thiago/12219646/35311) that he should return to Germany because “he’s not getting on at Liverpool.”

He said (as quoted by [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/door-is-never-closed-club-told-to-bring-back-liverpool-man-player-rarely-able-to-convince-reds/)): “*How about Bayern bring Thiago back to Munich? He’s not getting on at Liverpool and in Munich he is missed by Hansi Flick and the fans.*

“*Anyone who says goodbye to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge so emotionally, the door is certainly never completely closed.”*

Since October, Thiago has started just 10 games in all competitions, with Tuesday night’s 2-0 win against RB Leipzig being his first appearances in the Champions League for the Reds ([Whoscored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/74939/Show/Thiago)).

Unsurprisingly, supporters were not impressed with Matthaus’ comments, not taking his injuries into account this season and his lack of game time. A couple of them insisted Thiago is remaining put at Anfield, while another two suggested that his comments are disrespectful.
