# Liverpool: Fans disagree with Neco Williams’ nomination for 2020 Golden Boy award

**Liverpool defender [Neco Williams](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/liverpool-fc-transfer-rumours/neco-williams-profile/) has been [nominated for the 2020 Golden Boy award](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/408684-neco-williams-named-on-golden-boy-2020-shortlist), but plenty of Reds fans feel that he should not have made the 40-man longlist.**

The Welsh teenager is among [six current Premier League players](https://www.tuttosport.com/sondaggi/calcio/golden-boy/2020/09/15-73795990/vota_il_golden_boy_2020_le_40_nomination/) to be nominated but is the only one from the English champions, with the likes of Curtis Jones [being overlooked](https://www.tuttosport.com/sondaggi/calcio/golden-boy/2020/09/15-73795990/vota_il_golden_boy_2020_le_40_nomination/) despite the midfielder also [making an impact for the first team](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jan/05/jurgen-klopp-liverpool-carlo-ancelotti-everton-teenagers-reserves-reality-check) in recent months. As per [liverpoolfc.com](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/408684-neco-williams-named-on-golden-boy-2020-shortlist), the initial 40-player list will be halved next month.

Williams, who [made his senior Wales debut](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/neco-williams/nationalmannschaft/spieler/503680/verein_id/3864) and [scored his first international goal](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/neco-williams/nationalmannschaft/spieler/503680/verein_id/3864) this month, broke into Liverpool’s first team last season and has made [12 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/neco-williams/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/503680/verein/31) for Jurgen Klopp’s side. However, despite [some impressive displays](https://tbrfootball.com/been-superb-pundit-raves-about-liverpool-18-year-old-who-klopp-deemed-super/), he [struggled in the Community Shield](https://www.thisisanfield.com/2020/08/taki-joins-the-party-but-neco-struggles-5-talking-points-from-liverpool-1-1-arsenal/) defeat to Arsenal last month and was [substituted at half-time](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8504387/Neco-Williams-shows-Premier-League-start-not-Brighton-display.html) on the night of his first Premier League start against Brighton.

These Reds fans on Twitter feel that the 19-year-old’s Golden Boy nomination came too soon, with the teenager still an inexperienced [backup to Trent Alexander-Arnold](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-liverpool/kadernachposition/verein/31) at right-back. One Kopite even said that the Welsh youngster has looked “awful” whenever he has played.

Check out some of the Twitter reaction from Liverpool fans below:

> As much as I like Neco he hasn’t been on the same level of the likes of Halaand and Davies so I believe he doesn’t really deserve it 🤷

> I’m sorry but he doesn’t deserve it… like at all. He needs to just get his head down learn from management and his team mates and express himself on the pitch. Right now he’s not done enough. Let’s see how much he can improve.
