# Liverpool: Fans excited by prospect of signing Declan Rice

**Many Liverpool fans reacted in delight after an update was provided regarding the Reds’ reported interest in West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice.**

According to [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/jan/26/chelsea-interest-in-declan-rice-likely-to-end-with-frank-lampard-departure-west-ham), Frank Lampard’s exit as Chelsea manager has ended any chance of the Blues signing the 22-year-old, which could potentially open up the path for the Reds to make a move in the summer.

Rice has the ability to play in [central midfield and at centre back](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/declan-rice/profil/spieler/357662), which could be in line with manager Jurgen Klopp’s thinking due to his side’s injury crisis this season.

Both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been ruled out for a significant amount of time due to [serious knee injuries](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1387315/Liverpool-news-Joe-Gomez-knee-injury-scar-return-Virgil-van-Dijk-Diogo-Jota). With Joel Matip also [struggling](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joel-matip/verletzungen/spieler/82105) to stay fit, Liverpool have no established centre-backs to choose from.
