# Liverpool: Fans hail Trent Alexander-Arnold on 3-year anniversary of first-team debut

**Three years ago today, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp [handed a competitive first team debut to a teenage right-back](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37686653) in the Reds’ 2-1 win over Tottenham in the EFL Cup.**

Trent Alexander-Arnold has since gone on to [win the Champions League](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/trent-alexander-arnold/erfolge/spieler/314353) with the club and, on the three-year anniversary of his Reds debut, he tweeted: “Time flies! 3 years since my debut…loving it #YNWA”, along with an image of him in action on the night. \[[via @trentaa98](https://twitter.com/trentaa98/status/1187692270369300480)\]

The right-back made his [Premier League debut against Middlesbrough](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/club/liverpool/364/blog/post/3019259/adam-lallana-man-of-the-match-performance-leads-liverpool-to-victory) two months later and was then given his [first league start away to Manchester United](https://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/premier-league/zlatan-ibrahimovic-to-the-rescue-as-manchester-united-fight-back-to-claim-point-against-liverpool-35369322.html) in January 2017. He ended the 2016/17 campaign as [Liverpool’s Young Player of the Season](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/2017-liverpool-players-awards-live-13010663).

Alexander-Arnold made a further [34 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/trent-alexander-arnold/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/314353) the following season, [scoring three times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/trent-alexander-arnold/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/314353) and [playing in the Champions League final against Real Madrid](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/may/26/real-madrid-liverpool-champions-league-final-match-report), with [40 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/trent-alexander-arnold/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/314353) and a [Champions League winner’s medal](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jun/01/tottenham-liverpool-champions-league-final-match-report) to show for his efforts in 2018/19.

Having only turned 21 earlier this month, he is already just [two games away from 100 first team appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/trent-alexander-arnold/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/314353) for Liverpool, while he is the [youngest player to start in two consecutive Champions League finals](https://www.sportbible.com/football/news-liverpools-alexander-arnold-makes-champions-league-final-history-20190601).

In recent days, he has been [nominated for the Ballon d’Or](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/365217-salah-alexander-arnold-mane-alisson-wijnaldum-firmino-van-dijk-ballon-dor-shortlist) and [entered the Guinness World Records book for 2020](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/368831-trent-alexander-arnold-guinness-world-records) for the most Premier League assists by a defender in one season.

Alexander-Arnold has followed in the footsteps of players such as [Steven Gerrard](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/steven-gerrard/profil/spieler/3109) and [Jamie Carragher](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jamie-carragher/profil/spieler/3597) in graduating from Liverpool’s academy to become a first team regular and European champion at the club.

These Liverpool fans on Twitter showed their appreciation for the 21-year-old after seeing his tweet:

> Our next Gerrard, you absolute legend
