# Liverpool: Fans incensed with James Pearce’s update on Sven Botman

**Many Liverpool fans were not impressed to discover what The Athletic journalist James Pearce had to say regarding the Reds’ reported transfer target, Sven Botman.**

Speaking on the Red Agenda Podcast (cited by [Anfield Edition](https://twitter.com/AnfieldEdition/status/1346507578080190465)), the Reds writer confirmed that there is “not a possibility” that Jurgen Klopp’s side will move for the 20-year-old this month.

He added that the German tactician will only be interested in making a signing at the back if he can get a target that meets two criteria. Firstly, if the price is right, and secondly, if the player can fit into the long-term planning of his squad at Anfield.

Liverpool have no established central defenders available for selection at this time. Both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been ruled out for the foreseeable future with [serious knee injuries](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/liverpool-injury-news-van-dijk-23254586)whilst Joel Matip is also nursing an adductor issue which has sidelined him for a [few weeks](https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/joel-matip-injury-how-long-return-date-liverpool-team-news-809567).

Fabinho and Jordan Henderson both had to step in at the back during their [1-0](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55463017) defeat to Southampton last time out, missing out on the chance to extend their lead over their arch-rivals Manchester United in the title race.

With the Reds having to play two midfielders at centre back, some supporters could not understand why their club has taken such a stance in regards to their transfer plans, with some even questioning the ambition of the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, led by majority shareholder John Henry.
